Fireworks & Furry Friends: How to Help Your Dog Stay Calm

Summer celebrations are full of fun — but for our four-legged family members, fireworks can be downright frightening. At Camp Ruff It, we’ve cared for hundreds of pups during noisy nights, and we know just how important it is to create a calm, safe space for your dog during fireworks season.

Whether it’s the 4th of July, New Year’s Eve, or a neighborhood block party, here are our top tips to help your dog stay relaxed during fireworks.

1. Create a Safe, Quiet Space

Dogs feel most secure when they have a cozy den to retreat to. Set up a quiet room away from windows with their bed, favorite toys, and blankets. Closing the blinds and playing soft music or white noise can help drown out the sound of fireworks.

2. Stay Calm Yourself

Dogs are incredibly tuned in to your energy. If you’re anxious about how they’ll react, they’ll pick up on it. Speak in a calm, cheerful voice and avoid over-comforting them (which can reinforce fear).

3. Exercise Early in the Day

A tired dog is a calmer dog. Give your pup a long walk or play session earlier in the day to help burn off extra energy. Physical activity and mental stimulation can reduce stress later on.

4. Try Calming Tools

Many pet parents find success with:

  • Thundershirts or calming wraps

  • CBD treats or vet-approved calming supplements

  • Lavender-scented sprays (made for dogs)Always check with your vet before starting any new product.

5. Provide Distractions

Frozen Kongs, puzzle feeders, or lick mats with peanut butter can work wonders. Not only do they keep your dog busy, but licking also naturally soothes their nervous system.

6. Keep Them Indoors

Even if your dog is usually fine outside, fireworks can cause sudden panic. Many dogs bolt during loud displays, leading to lost pets. Make sure your dog is inside and their ID tags and microchip info are up to date — just in case.

7. Consider Boarding During Fireworks

If you know your dog struggles during fireworks, boarding at a calm, secure facility like Camp Ruff It can make a big difference. We offer 24/7 staffing, soothing overnight routines, and personalized care so your dog feels comforted and never alone — even on the noisiest nights.

Fireworks Don’t Have to Be Frightening

With a little planning and some TLC, your dog can make it through fireworks season with less stress. At Camp Ruff It, we’re always here to help — whether that means providing overnight care or offering expert tips to keep tails wagging year-round.
