Sending your dog to daycare for the first time can be exciting but also a little nerve-wracking for both you and your pup. At Camp Ruff It, we want to make sure your dog has a smooth and stress-free transition into their new play environment. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you and your furry friend prepare for their first day at doggie daycare!
1. Schedule a Meet-and-Greet
At Camp Ruff It, our meet-and-greets are by appointment only and last between 3-5 hours. This allows your dog to slowly adjust to our facility, meet our staff, and interact with other dogs in a controlled, positive way. Dropping them off for this introductory session helps ease them into the daycare environment without feeling overwhelmed.
2. Ensure Your Dog is Up-to-Date on Vaccinations
Most reputable doggie daycares, including Camp Ruff It, require proof of vaccinations for the safety of all dogs in their care. Commonly required vaccinations include:
Rabies
Distemper/Parvo (DHPP)
Bordetella (Kennel Cough)
Flea and Tick Prevention Plan
Check with your daycare provider for their specific requirements and make sure your pup is protected before their first visit.
3. Start with Short Visits
If your dog passes their initial meet-and-greet, we will then come up with a plan tailored to your dog regarding a suggested schedule of half days or full days of daycare so they thrive. This allows them to get comfortable with the new environment at a pace that suits their personality and energy levels.
4. Work on Basic Commands
A solid foundation in basic obedience commands like “sit,” “stay,” and “come” can help your dog feel more secure and responsive in a group play setting. It also makes it easier for daycare staff to guide your pup through the day.
5. Pack the Essentials
Most daycares will provide water, playtime, and rest areas, but there are a few things you might want to bring:
A labeled bag with their favorite treats (if allowed)
Any necessary medications
A six to eight foot leash
A properly fitted collar with ID tags
6. Exercise Before Drop-Off
A short walk or some playtime before heading to daycare can help burn off excess energy and reduce nervousness. A relaxed dog will have an easier time adjusting to the new setting.
7. Stay Calm and Positive
Dogs pick up on our emotions, so if you’re feeling anxious, your pup might feel uneasy too. Keep your energy upbeat and treat drop-off like a normal, positive event. Avoid long goodbyes—just a quick pat and a cheerful “See you later!” will do.
8. Monitor Their First Few Visits
After their first day, check in with the daycare staff to see how your dog did. Some dogs adjust quickly, while others might take a few visits to get fully comfortable. If your pup seems particularly tired or overstimulated afterward, consider adjusting their schedule as needed. Camp Ruff It staff is happy to offer recommendations specifically tailored to your dog.
9. Keep a Consistent Routine
Dogs thrive on routine, so if daycare will be a regular part of their schedule, try to drop them off and pick them up around the same times. Consistency helps them feel secure and know what to expect.
10. Celebrate Their Success!
Completing the first day of daycare is a big milestone! Reward your pup with extra cuddles, a fun walk, or a special treat to reinforce the positive experience.
Doggie daycare can be a fantastic way to provide socialization, exercise, and enrichment for your dog. By taking the time to prepare, you’ll set your pup up for a fun and stress-free experience!
