How Much Money Do Pet Owners Spend On Their Dogs' Birthdays?

Whether it's a birthday, a gotcha day or what pet owners think might be their dog's birthday, they are celebrating - in a big way!

When's your dog's birthday? My first dog, Chanel, was born on January 4, 1994 and my second dog, Sonny was born on September 1, 2004.

We would celebrate Chanel's birthday with a frozen dog ice cream bar, maybe the name will come to me, but chances are they don't make them anymore. It was a freezie-pup or something, and she loved them almost as much as she loved drinking coffee out of my mom's cup when she accidentally left it on the side table.

For Sonny's birthday, we would make pancakes and give him one... or two. He would hold a big pancake in his mouth for what seemed like hours before he finally ate one, those are some pretty sweet memories for my family but probably only cost my parents a few dollars.

These days, pet birthdays are a bit more expensive.

According to GetPartyAnimal.com dog owners in the United States spend an average of $612 on their gifts, treats and extras for their pets and the younger the pet owner the more they tend to spend.

27 percent of dog owners host a birthday party for their pets and 38% of dog owners make sure their pups have a pet-safe birthday cake.
