What Does 'Dog Days of Summer' Mean?

You might think the 'dog days of summer,' are when it's so hot out that you just want to lay around like your dog, but the real reason we call the end of the season this might surprise you.

When we think of the dog days of summer, we probably think of the week or two before kids go back to school or the very end of August, but actually the dog days start before the 4th of July!

According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, the dog days of summer are from July 3 until August 11 and the name comes from Astrology, not feeling like a sleepy, sweaty pup.

the phrase comes from ancient skywatchers who noticed that the brightest star, Sirius, rose with the Sun during this period

The dog days is a period of 40 days just after the summer solstice, which are generally the hottest days in North America... but Sirius isn't usually spotted until August 13!

This time is actually considered unlucky and full of drought and fever, so it sounds like we should be pretty happy that the dog days are done for this year!
